Teeth Whitening Product Guide

This teeth whitening guide  - and the articles on this site - will help you become an informed consumer so that you will avoid the frustration of wasting your money on products that do not work.

Your first option for teeth whitening is having your dentist perform the whitening for you. This method will set you back anywhere from $400 to over $1,000. This is the most costly option. The one positive part is that you are guaranteed to have a significantly whiter smile in only one session. One session takes about an hour. Followup sessions may be recommended to you to make sure the whiteness stays. This would cause the amount you pay to increase.

The second option is to purchase a teeth whitening kit from your local store. The prices for these range from $12 to nearly $40. The manufacturers of these products are the same companies that manufacture the toothpaste and other oral care products.

There are two primary whitening products types available in your local store: the whitening strip and the tooth "paint." You can find information on whitening strips here. The "paints" are simply whitening gels in a bottle, which you are supposed to apply at night, and leave on while you sleep. Unfortunately, these gels are extremely difficult to apply. It seems as if the creators of these products forgot that the inside of your mouth is wet! The saliva in your mouth makes application difficult for your front teeth, and nearly impossible for your molars. This means that you will get an uneven whitening, if at all.

The other downside of these teeth whitening gels is their use of glycerin which will likely make your teeth feel quite sensitive. In fact, glycerin can even cause sharp pains in your mouth if you are not careful. Finally, even though the gels are the cheapest whitening method available, they give the worst results. If your front teeth get a little whiter, your back teeth won't match up and your smile will look strange. In addition, 3-6 months after using a gel, the whiteness will wear off.

The final option is to use a whitening kit specially designed for at home use, and available over the Internet. This kit is designed by a dentist with huge amounts of experience in the field, not by some company only looking to add another product to their line. The product from the dentist is fresh and works in 5 days. In addition, there are no harmful ingredients like glycerin included.
